To showcase the incredible artwork being produced at Bayley Arts, we selected four unique artworks to be featured on fabric for the upcoming fashion show. Here is a little about each piece and the artists.
Colours of the Ocean, 2023 - Sally Tran - Pencil on paper
Sally describes her delicate and distinctive mark-making in this piece as: ‘This is like all the colours of the ocean’.
Sally is an early career artist and has exhibited at Bayside City Council over the last three years. Sally’s work has also been featured in a publication by the Australian Council of Learned Academies in 2022 and recently her work has been licensed by a number of organisations for her art to be used in a commercial capacity.
Last year, Sally exhibited with well know artist Carolyn Cardinet in the Plastic Problems exhibition shown at Bayside City Council and Bayley Arts. Sally often enjoys the social elements of her art practice, using connection with peers, place and community as catalysts for her work.
Sally also has a wonderful sense of style and enjoys making jewellery. Sally’s work was chosen for its delicacy and our textile artists have loved working with her design on their pieces.
People, 2023 - Thomas Weisner - Acrylic paint markers on canvas
Thomas is a well known figure in his local community, he often walks in his local area and meets and greets with many people each day.
He has connected with his local librarians, shop keepers and local figures. Thomas loves to chat and learn about their daily lives.
Thomas has made these distinctive shapes in his artwork for many years, he calls them people and one can draw links between these small figures and his community connections which form such an important part of his daily life.
Thomas has been able to explore making these marks with new materials on new surfaces at Bayley Arts and their vibrant and rhythmic qualities transcribe beautifully to textiles.
Many of our textile artists were drawn to making pieces with his work for this reason.
Artwork created by Bayley Arts Fashion Group
They commenced by discussing and exploring patterns and images found on textiles.
The eight artists then sat communally around a large sheet of paper and selected colours they loved.
They then explored shapes and fell into creating interloping circles and organic shape mimicking their own physical gathering around their art. They then layered watered down acrylic paints and line drawing following these patterns. The work was created through spontaneous shared mark making and social connection.
All artists involved were excited to see their artwork transposed to textiles and were next involved in the creation of textile artworks and clothing using it.
ARTISTS: Peter Ginn, Katie Van Der Hoven, Maryann Walker, Courtney Tonkin, Sharon Brayer, Jessica Short, Hayley James, Ioanna Constantelos.
Artwork created at the launch of Bayley Arts, by over 400 people who contributed to this piece.
Featuring the stunning collaborative artwork created at the launch of Bayley Arts, by over 400 people.
This artwork was initially lines and shapes transposed from the Bayley Arts building planning drawings onto canvas. These plan drawings transformed our building from an office block to thriving arts centre.
Over these lines, community guests who attended our Open Day painted shapes, pattern and line to create this collective expression of community and connection through art in celebration of our launch.
This artwork lives in our Bayley Arts studios as a reminder of the many people and stories that contribute to our vibrant community.
