Repetition and Drift, brings together two Bayley Arts artists Robyn Doherty and Elizabeth Nicolaou, whose approaches to art making differ visually but share a deep connection through their focus and immersion. One works through structure and repetition, the other through movement and intuition.
Though their visual languages differ, their practice reveals what happens when an artist becomes truly consumed by process: entering a hypnotic state where time, body and attention disappear into their creation and the outside world falls away.
ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Robyn Doherty started attending Bayley Arts in 2023 and has worked at Arts Project Australia (APA) since 2011 where she presented her first solo exhibition as a virtual installation in 2020. Robyn is known for her intricate patterns using paint pens and markers on canvas and paper. She has been included in a number of group exhibitions including Linden New Art, Melbourne Art Fair and Bayley Arts Gallery. In 2021 Robyn’s work was selected as part of a collaboration with APA and Australian fashion label Gorman. Robyn’s work is held in private collections in Australia.
Elizabeth Nicolaou is an up-and-coming artist at Bayley Arts, working mostly with acrylic and pastels on paper and cardboard. Her work is admired by audiences to Bayley Arts and beyond, and her process is described by staff as a flowing river, ‘bending, turning and drifting’ across the paper. Elizabeth has exhibited in several group exhibitions at Bayley Arts Gallery including the exhibition Make Your Mark 2025 and recently at Jump Left Gallery, Melbourne.
