The title of the exhibition emphasises the most critical learnt skill in photography. An understanding and control of the focus lens gives the photographer the artistic licence to highlight the beauty and importance of their subject. As novice photographers, the Bayley Arts photography group have experimented with focal points, light, contrast and the mechanics of the camera, and are excited to present their final images alongside Melbourne professional photographers.

Liza Clements
Spending her childhood on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, Liza has lived in Bayside Melbourne for many years. Having studied art and design she also worked in the printing industry as a graphic designer. Always aspiring to be an artist, inspiration came from the work of William Turner and Jeffery Smart. In 2008 she followed her dream, exploring the art of photography, completing her Advanced Diploma of Photography with an Art Specialisation in 2011. Since 2011 Liza has regularly exhibited her photographic art and received numerous awards and accolades, achieved through years of dedication to her work. In 2018 Liza was named The AIPP Victorian Landscape Photographer of the Year and she has also been recognised as a Master of Photography.
To date, Liza’s greatest achievement is her own recognition of the freedom she finds, whilst focused behind the lens, as a photographic artist.
Saville Coble
Saville Coble is a Melbourne-based photographer from King Island, Tasmania who works across commercial and art photography. He completed a Bachelor of Arts in Photography at RMIT, Melbourne, and has since had a successful career in commercial photography. Saville has presented his large format works in many exhibitions including ‘Summertime’, his third solo exhibition and book launch at Tacit Art Gallery, Melbourne. In 2012 he was a semi-finalist for the Moran Portrait Prize and is a finalist in the 2024 National Photographic Portrait Prize currently on show at the National Portrait Gallery, Canberra.
Sally Paterson
Growing up in New Zealand, Sally was often the one in her family capturing moments with a point-and-shoot camera. Her inspiration to take up photography more seriously came in 2017 after completing two introductory courses to study technical and aesthetics of image making. Since then, she's been awarded for her photographs in Australian and international competitions and has exhibited her works widely. Sally balances her passion for photography with a busy corporate career. Recently her work was exhibited alongside two local artists at the Alexandra Museum in Central Otago, New Zealand. Additionally, some of her pieces are currently on display at the ‘Art on the Pier’ Exhibition at Kerferd Road Pier, Albert Park.
Kaye Trathen
Kaye is a Melbourne-based photographer and began her photography journey in 2000. Studying for 2 years at the International College of Professional Photography, she learned all things photography - studio and natural lighting, black and white, structure, foundation, posing, architecture, corporate, editing and retouching. Kaye has since established a successful boutique photography business in family portraiture and continues to push her learnings creatively.
